How to Practice Yoga While Traveling

Maintaining your yoga practice while traveling can sound unrealistic and inaccessible. When you’re used to attending classes at a studio, it’s hard to imagine sun salutations in a tiny hotel room and maybe even without so much as a mat. But often travel is the time we need our yoga practice the most. From stiffness after a long car ride or flight to the stress that may come with your trip, movement and breathwork is usually just what you need. Thankfully, there are ways to not only make it happen, but also ways to have fun and try something new while doing it.

We at Yoga Baum have lots of suggestions for how you can keep up with your practice while on the go!

Try an Intuitive Practice

If you’re used to following an instructor through class, it may be refreshing to move intuitively through your own practice. Set aside an uninterrupted time of at least ten minutes, turn on some music and move through whatever stretches and poses are your favorites or feel good in the moment. If you are unsure where to start, begin on your back or seated for a few movements, next come to all fours and move a bit there, finally stand up for some more active poses before returning to a seat or your back.

Join a Live Virtual Class

This is the best way to take your in-studio classes on the road. Sign up for a live virtual class and receive a zoom link to join 10-15 minutes before the start time. This is a great way to continue feeling like part of the community and have built-in accountability to show up at a certain time. It’s also a fun activity to try with your travel-mates whether it be your partner, parents, kids, or friends. Maybe they’ll find that yoga is just what they needed to feel great while traveling too!

Take an On-Demand Class

If you are all about being guided through practice, but live classes are not going to work in your travel schedule, try On Demand. If you’re a member of our studio, you can access our On-Demand Library of classes, where you can find recordings of all the classes on the Yoga Baum’s schedule or try a quick 10, 15, 20 or 30 minute class that works better in your day. If you want to keep up daily movement but have a busy trip planned, a quick On-Demand class once a day will help make your goal more realistic.

Try a Yoga Series

A yoga series is an amazing way to set a goal to prioritize self care while traveling. The Strength Series will help you target a different area of your body each day for a balanced workout plan for a week long trip. The Simple Self Care Series will help you create time for meditation, breathwork and journaling in addition to movement while you’re away. Having a series to complete will help motivate you to carve out time for yourself as your work to complete it during your time away. Check out some more series options here.

Book a Virtual Private Session

Even if you don’t usually take privates with our instructors, a virtual 1:1 session could be a great way to treat yourself while traveling. Our yoga teachers will customize a plan to address whatever your goals are whether it be to relax and unwind, get in a good full body workout, or renew your energy with Reiki healing. If you are able to schedule one at the start of your trip, we can help you make a balanced plan to continue your self care and movement the rest of your time away.

Taking your yoga practice on the go is a great way to feel good while traveling and maintain your routine while away. The best part is that you’ll come home feeling refreshed and renewed without the exhaustion that often follows your travels. Whether you book a virtual class or try moving intuitively through your own practice, make sure to schedule the time in advance so you can put yourself first and make self-care a priority during your travels.
